Derek Entenmann is an American-born tattoo artist and visual artist based in Salzburg, Austria. He began tattooing professionally in 2008 and became part of the early generation of artists pushing tattooing beyond traditional style categories, combining abstraction, geometry, watercolor, sketchwork and contemporary-art influences years before that fusion became common in modern tattooing.
It began with drawing, making things, chasing ideas and trying to understand why certain images felt alive while others felt dead.
I grew up in Pennsylvania and spent years absorbing whatever visual material I could find: graffiti, painting, architecture, album artwork, strange machinery, comic books, sculpture, damaged surfaces and the visual debris of everyday life.
I was never especially interested in staying inside one medium. Drawing led to painting. Painting led to objects. Objects led to tattoos. Tattoos eventually became another way to build artwork around movement, structure and human experience.
By 2008, tattooing had become the main vehicle.
Before tattooing became my profession, experiences with artists outside the tattoo world changed how I understood what an artistic life could look like.
Meeting H.R. Giger in 2004 was one of those moments. Giger was not simply making pictures. He had built an entire visual universe.
Paintings, environments, furniture, sculpture, architecture, objects — everything belonged to the same language.
That idea stayed with me.
Around 2009, tattooing looked very different. Watercolor tattooing had not yet become a mainstream category. Large geometric compositions were still unusual. Abstract tattooing was rarely presented as its own serious direction.
I was part of the early generation of tattoo artists pushing those ideas together.
My work began combining geometric structure, painterly color, sketch marks, abstraction, blackwork, fragmentation and contemporary-art influences at a time when those approaches were still far outside the normal tattoo vocabulary.
I never really thought of watercolor, geometry and abstraction as separate tattoo styles. They were tools. Different ways of building one visual language.
Before people regularly searched for “abstract tattoo artist” or “watercolor tattoo artist,” I was already trying to figure out what happened when those ideas collided.
The point was to create tattoos that felt more like artwork and less like choosing an image from a menu.
Travel became part of the education.
Brooklyn. Greece. Switzerland. Germany. Austria. Tattoo conventions across Europe and the United States.
Every place added something. Architecture. Posters. graffiti. Museums. ruins. industrial spaces. landscape. old typography. people.
The tattoos became less about fitting a recognizable category and more about building a complete composition from whatever visual material made sense.

Tattooing becomes the main medium and the beginning of an international career.

After years of moving between cities, conventions, guest spots and temporary spaces, the work eventually needed a permanent base.
Hive Tattoo Studio in Salzburg became that place.
Hive is not meant to feel like a tattoo factory. It is a working creative space built around custom projects, collaboration and artists developing their own visual identities.
The same thinking eventually expanded beyond tattooing into Hive Art Gallery, painting, objects, limited editions and other projects.
Today the work moves between tattooing, painting, sculpture, prints, apparel and objects.
The medium changes. The underlying questions do not.
How much structure does an image need? Where should it break? How does the eye move? How does the body change the composition? How much of the process should remain visible?
